Object type certainty: Certain

Medieval gilded silver annular brooch with surviving pin. The frame is circular, wedge-shaped in cross-section to give a flat inward-sloping surface on either face, and has a construction for the surviving pin. The pin has a groove set between two ridges on one face at the junction of loop and shaft; the shaft appears to have a stamped motif, perhaps a letter O, half way down on both faces.

The frame carries an inscription in Lombardic lettering on both faces. The front (judging from the decoration on the pin) reads + AMVR VENT TVTEN (or R), a variant of the common inscription Amor Vincit Omnia or Love Conquers All, but in French (amour vainc tout) rather than Latin.

The other face reads + IO SVI FLUR DE LEL IA (the S is reversed), meaning I Am The Flower Of Loyal [Love].

The brooch dates probably to the thirteenth or early fourteenth century.

Dimensions: diameter 17 mm, width of frame 1.5 mm, thickness of frame 1 mm. Length of pin 15 mm.

Notes:

In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.

Inscription: + AMVR VENT TVTEN / + IO SVI FLUR DE LEL IA
