FINGER RING

Unique ID: WMID-A79024

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

An incomplete gilded silver finger ring, of Medieval dating (AD 1200 to AD 1400).

Around 50% of the finger ring is present, consisting of the bezel and part of the hoop. The rest of the hoop is missing, presumed lost in antiquity. The edges of the hoop look deliberately cut.

The finger ring has been made in one point, with the bezel being part of the hoop and not separately soldered on. The bezel is lozenge shaped, with a four petalled flower as a motif. Small diagonal grooves or hatching are present along the edges of the flower. The hoop is rectangular or flat in cross section. It was originally inscribed, with only a cross potent at the start and a saltire or X at the end remaining.

The bezel measures 12.1 mm in length, 11.1 mm tall and 1.1 mm thick. The hoop is 3.2 mm wide and 1.1 mm thick. Altogether the finger ring fragment measures 11.1 mm in length, 20.8 mm wide and 6.7 mm thick. It weighs 1.1 g.

The finger ring is a mid yellow colour, with an even surface patina.

A similar finger ring, albeit made from pewter as opposed to gilded silver, was recovered during the excavations of the London Foreshore (Pritchard, 2002, page 334, no 1632). This finger ring also had a lozenge style bezel, cast in one piece with hatched decoration. It was dated to London Ceramic Phase 7 (c. AD 1200 to AD 1230). A couple of similar finger rings have been recorded on the PAS database, including WAW-E958F8; IOW-0723C2; SWYOR-6D5244 and NLM-A97266. All are considered to be Medieval in dating (13th to 14th Centuries AD). Therefore it is reasonable to assume that this finger ring is of a similar date.

Therefore as the finger ring is older than 300 years old, and will have a precious metal content of greater than 10%, it should be considered as potential Treasure under the requirements of the Treasure Act 1996.
