A cast copper alloy shield-shaped horse harness pendant dating to the Medieval period, (AD1100-1500).
The object is sub-shield shaped in plan with one broken edge. It is slightly curved in profile. The remains of a heraldic device can be seen on the outer face, consisting of a double bend sinister. There is no remaining enamel and the device can therefore not be interpreted. There are no remaining forms of attachment. The object has a light green pitted surface.
Similar heraldic horse harness pendants can be seen in Cherry (1991) in Saunders (ed) Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum Medieval Catalogue Part 1. Enamelled and heraldic horse pendants predominate during the 13th and 14th centuries. (Griffiths, 1995, 'The Medieval Horse and its Equipment').
