Incomplete medieval copper alloy strap clasp, comprising rectangular frame, sub-triangular outside edge in the form of an animal-head with incised lines suggesting the stylised angular features, drilled holes for eyes (one broken) and cast grooved projecting lugs aligned with and projecting from both sides as ears. Recessed bar, pin missing. Length 25.5mm. Width 16mm. A similar form of strap-clasp bearing a king's head is illustrated and discussed in Egan and Pritchard (1991), 119, fig.78, no.568, and other examples of both the heads of kings and of bishops are known. Animal heads have been found of strap-clasps from a number of sites in Norfolk and elsewhere, examples from the former include Great Dunham (NMS-73DB67, HER 45401), Grimston (NMS-DF0967, HER 11789), Haveringland (HER 44066), Outwell (HER 44753) and Sedgeford (HER 45479). 14th century.
