BUCKLE

Unique ID: WILT-9ACCCC

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A incomplete gilded copper alloy buckle of probable late medieval or possible early post-medieval date (c. 1400-1600). The buckle is D-shaped in plan and is missing the bar and the pin. It features a lozengiform area at the centre of the outside edge, projecting beyond the rest of the frame, with a central incised groove forming a pin rest. The frame tapers in thickness from the pin rest and terminates at either end in an old break. There is an irregularly spaced design of punched ring-and-dot motifs ranged around the interior edge of the obverse, which retain traces of gilding. The reverse is slightly concave.

The buckle measures 26.39mm in length, 11.49mm maximum width, 4.85mm minimum width, is 2.85mm thick and weighs 4.34g.

The gilding suggests a medieval date, but there is a pair complete double-loop buckle frame with the same lozengiform panel and grooved pin rest, and a white-metal coating, from a context of 1485-1600 at Sandal Castle, Wakefield (Mayes and Butler 1983, 231, fig. 1, nos. 11-12).
