The unfinished fragmentary remains of a polished Neolithic (c. 4500-2000 BC) handaxe. The flint handaxe has been worked to the ‘rough out’ stage. All that remains of the unfinished tool is the wider butt end of the rough out. The tool has been broken in half across the centre of the flint. The break has secondary breaks on all of the edges. It is unclear where the original bulb of percussion would have been as this has been removed by secondary working. One surface of the handaxe is coated with about 80% of the original cortex, which suggests that the flint had only just begun to be worked before it broke, or it was discarded by the flint knapper for some reason. The opposite surface of the flint has only had a few flakes removed, which has left behind a couple of negative scars. There does not appears to be any reworking on the edges of the flint. The flakes, which have been removed, were probably removed by the plough or by the flint hitting other flints in the soil. The surface (without the cortex) has a light greyish-white patina. Underneath the patina the flake has a normal colour of light brownish-grey. All measurements have been taken from the widest points.
