SEAL MATRIX

Unique ID: SUSS-07E5C9

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A cast lead-alloy Medieval seal matrix, dating to the 13th century AD. The seal is vesica-shaped, with a raised central decoration and outer legend, both of which are illegible due to severe surface wear. The reverse face has a large rectangular suspension lug with circular hole running parallel to the outer face. Beneath the suspension lug is a raised vertical line with further radiating lines, possibly meant to suggest a standing saint or angel; however, this is also illegible. A small fragment of the outer edge and decoration is missing due to old damage, possibly sustained while in situ. The seal matrix is of an even light grey colour. It measures 37.9 mm long, 21.3 mm maximum width, 4.5 mm thick at centre, 9.3 mm thick at lug; it weighs 14.2 grams.
