Medieval copper-alloy seal matrix, probably of mid to late 13th-century date. The seal matrix is complete and is in good condition. The matrix is pointed oval in shape and has a slightly convex rear face with a rounded pierced lug at the apex and a gradually weakening rib. The surrounding inscription on the seal die is in Lombardic letters and reads: + S'CLIMENCE DAME DV BOIS (Seal of Climence, Lady of Bois). The final letter 'S' has a floral trefoil 'tail' from the upper part of the letter to fill the space at the end of the inscription.
The central device depicts a standing female figure viewed from the side and holding an open book (perhaps a psalter) in front of her. The figure is draped in a long dress reaching to the floor with deep vertical folds. Horizontal lines across the chest beneath the shoulders depict the upper portion of the dress. The figure's head is looking forward and has shoulder-length hair or is wearing a head-scarf. The eyes, nose and mouth are discernible on the face.
Climence is the lady of a manor named 'Bois'; such a manor is known of in Auxerre in France.
