An incomplete silver spoon, of Post Medieval dating (probably AD 1650 to AD 1750).
Around 50% of the spoon is present, with half of the bowl and handle missing, presumed lost in antiquity.
Around 25% of the bowl is present and the angles at the shoulder are suggestive of a fig shaped bowl. A triangular 'rat tail' is present on the reverse. It starts at the top of the bowl (base of the handle), below a semi circular depression. The rattail extends to around the half way point of the bowl.
The handle has a flattened D shape, with the curved surface on the front of the bowl, and the flat surface to the reverse. Two possible marks or incuse stamps are present on the back of the handle. The lower one consisting of a capital letter R, within a probable triangular cartouche. The upper one is more indistinct and may consist of an animal facing right (towards the handle terminal), with front paw raised and tail out behind.
The spoon measures 71.4 mm in length, 45.2 mm wide and 4.8 mm thick. It weighs 15.9 g.
The spoon is a mid to dark grey colour, with an even surface patina.
The shape of the bowl is suggestive of an Early Post Medieval dating (AD 1650 to AD 1750). Therefore as it has a precious metal content of greater than 10% and is likely to be older than 300 years, it should be reported as potential Treasure under the requirements of the Treasure Act 1996.
