STRAP END

Unique ID: FAKL-8B6E69

Object type certainty: Certain

Early Medieval strap end, cast copper alloy with niello inlay. Decoration chisel cut rather than cast and the incised lines inlaid with niello, which is missing from some areas. Down the centre of the strap end is what appears to be a simplified version of a Borre ring chain. This is flanked by two elongaged oval panels below which are what look like scroll-ended tendril. Further tendrils for the eye-brows. The animal head terminal is boldly executed with raised eyes set within recess areas, each eye containing a dot. Between the eyes is a bar which extends down to form the nose. At the top of the strap end is a bifurcation through which are two copper alloy rivets. The back of the strap end retains traces of silvering. Condition good. Length 46.6mm, Width 15.3mm, Thickness 3.1mm.

An unusual object, the decoration seems to owe something to the Viking Borre style and the tendrils used in the decoration can be paralleld on an openwork strapend from 'Elloughton' East Yorkshire (FAKL-852435). The 'tendrils' are similar to those seen on the strap end from Waldringfield Suffolk (Thomas, Strapends Part I, Fig. 12) which was placed by Thomas in his Class A Type 5 characterised by the use of niello and silver wire (th latter being absent in this case).
