Unique ID: PUBLIC-F89F59

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete copper alloy Roman trumpet headed brooch dating to AD 75-175.The head is trumpet-shaped with the axis bar and pin attached within the flared end ( the spring is missing). At the top of the trumpet there is a incomplete loop. The bow is decorated with two transverse ribs flanking a devolved "acanthus" style knop which comprises two tri-lobed semi-circular mouldings flanking a central plain semi-circular moulding. The foot terminates with a out-turned knop and the back retains most of the catchplate. A small section of the pin survives . The brooch is a little distorted and has a green patina. Length of brooch: 39.59 mm. Width: 25.79 mm. Thickness: 5.00 mm. Weight: 8.435 grams. Reference: Richard. Hattatt. ANCIENT AND ROMANO-BRITISH BROOCHES. Page 106, Plate 79 for a similar example.

Notes:

It is probable that this may well be a early British type with a out facing knop.
