A complete post-Medieval thick sheet copper-alloy closed thimble (c. 1800-c. 1900).
This thimble has a thickened flaring rim, sloping sides and a domed crown. Circumferential features consist of rim which seems to be decorated but is worn and not clear. Above the rim is a vertically corrugated band with raised Gothic style lettering:
(frond initial mark) FORGET·ME·NOT·
A plain shallow groove separates the corrugated band from horizontal lines of machine-made indentations which extend over the crown.
This thimble is drab green and has traces of gilding on the outer surface.
Height: 20.8mm; diameter of rim: 16.3mm; thickness of rim: 1.6mm. Weight: 3.53g.
Other thimbles with the phrase 'forget me not' have been recorded on The Portable Antiquities Scheme database. See finds: BERK-E1DFB8; CAM-791EA0; NARC-67D074 and NLM-ED7F31.
