A lead alloy probable spindle whorl possibly dating from the Iron Age, about 400 BC - AD 43. The whorl is sub-spherical with a flattened face top and bottom. This would fit into type B2 in the Coppergate classification system, a type that was mainly used in the Iron Age, but continuing into the 7th century. The central aperture is circular and has a diameter of about 6mm. This makes it more likely that the whorl is Iron Age in date (Walton Rogers, 2007, page 23 - 25). However, whorls are notoriously difficult to date and a later date (up to the AD 1600) cannot be ruled out. The whorl has a flaky patina and is a light grey colour. It is 20.7mm tall, 24.77mm diameter and weighs 62.43g.
