Probably Post Medieval cast copper-alloy cup weight belonging to nested set c. 1100-c. 1900 AD with the later end of this range more likely. This weight is circular in plan. Its sides, 2.9mm thick and 15.4mm tall, flare evenly upwards from the base to a rim. The base is flat on the inside and outside. The inner and outer faces and rim are plain. Outer diameter of rim: 28.3mm; outer diameter of base: 22.2 mm. Weight:28.05g. (0.989 ounces).

According to Biggs (1992, 14-16) this type of weight was in use from the 12th century and throughout the medieval to post-medieval period although they were most common in the 17th-19th centuries. The earlier examples tend to have thicker sides and decorated rims and the plainness of this example suggest a post-medieval date. In the English-troy bullion system, 20 pennyweights = 1 ounce, equal to 31.1grams so the weight may have some loss due to corrosion, and originally was 1 ounce.
