A late medieval to early post-medieval cast lead alloy maidenhead spoon knop. This is the decorative end of a spoon broken off the top of a spoons stem. The figure depicts the bust of a female. Folds on the side and back of the head suggest the figure is wearing a long headdress. At the base there appears to be foliate or fleur de lis projections, rising from the base part way up her torso, one at the centre of the front and one at the back. Alternatively the figure may be kneeling with one leg forward and one back. The knop is now 22.7 mm long, 10.4mm wide and 8.6mm thick, weighing 5.92g.

Maidenhead spoons are dated from the later half of the 15th century to the mid-17th century and are also made in silver as well as lead-alloy such as the example here (Homer 1975, 36 and 37. The headdress depicted on this figure may in fact be a nun's habit which has been suggested in association with other examples (Homer 1975, ibid).
