RING

Unique ID: SF-E1BA9A

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete copper-alloy circular ring of Early-Medieval date.

It is circular in section. The terminals have been formed into slipknots and the knotted area has an oval to circular section, as is common in such rings.

This ring measures 26.61mm in external diameter, 18.13mm in internal diameter, 6.94mm in thickness at the knots, 2.92mm in thickness at the wire, 2.98g in weight.

Such rings appear to have had multiple functions; they have been interpreted as finger-rings, ear-rings, or rings to secure a veil or cap (Walton Rogers 2007, 159, fig 5.21) as well as part of necklaces (Geake 1997, 49, 274-275, fig 4.10 and 4.11) or as rings belonging to a chatelaine to hold small personal items such as toilet equipment (Geake 1997, 57, 282, fig 4.18).
