A complete flat, circular lead personal seal matrix of Medieval date.
On the front is a central motif depicting a quatrefoil with a central pellet and a short detached radial groove between each petal. This is surrounded by a legend that is slightly damaged at the beginning, but appears to read + S' SASILIE:SCEVINE (Seal of Cecily Sherwin, perhaps) The first bar of the V is doubled and may be a V. The ending of the first name with an E suggests this is the name of a woman. According to Reaney and Wilson, Sherwin comes from the Old English sceran 'to cut' and wind, implying a wind-cutter or fast runner.
On the reverse, towards the top, is an unpierced integral oval suspension lug. Beneath this is a central transverse ridge with three diagonal ridges radiating from it to the outer edge. This forms four triangles with a central pellet in each along the outer edge.
This seal matrix measures 26.29mm in diameter, 3.18mm in thickness, 12.24g in weight.
