A modern Islamic amulet found on the Thames foreshore. The amulet comprises a roughly cut silver disc, engraved on both sides. The disc was found wrapped in a thin plastic bag and inserted within a small sealed leather pouch which measures 36mm square..
Vesta Curtis of the Department of Coins and Medals at the British Museum comments:
This is an Islamic amulet with Sura 42, Verse 19 of the Koran (in Arabic): 'God is kind to its creations and is generous to those He chooses. He is great and victorious.' The other side shows a magic square surrounded by Arabic inscriptions (top)' In the name of God the Compassionate, the Merciful'. (3o'clock): 'O Generous' . (6 o'clock): 'O Compassionate. (9o'clock): 'O Merciful'.
The numbers refer to the 99 names of God (Allah) and a special combination of magic numbers. 66 stands for god/Allah. 104 stands for 'the Just'. 68= the Judge, etc.
