A cast copper alloy Roman brooch of equal-ended type, a Continental plate brooch of Mackreth's type2.c1, dating from the 1st to early 2nd century, in fair though worn condition. The brooch is largely complete but is missing its hinged pin, of which only a fragment remains. The small catchplate is pierced by a single circular aperture. The bow is parallel-sided, 22mm across, and forms a semi-circular curve. On both ends of the bow is a rounded collar from which projects a rounded D-shaped projection with a flat back. The bow itself is heavily decorated. Centrally on the bow is a shallow rectangular platform which runs almost to the width of the bow. On the platform is a pair of addorsed bands of four sunken triangles, each inlaid with enamel (of uncertain colour) and with a wavy line between. Above and below the platform are areas of similar decoration but these are placed at 90 degrees to the platform. These areas of decoration are filled with niello which survives well. Patches of white metal surface coating also survive.
Brooches of this form are uncommon in Roman Britain. Examples can be found in Bayley and Butcher, p.171; Mackreth pl.112 no.8160; and Hattatt no.581-2, p.353.
