FINGER RING

Gold signet or seal ring. The bezel is large, flat and oval. It is inscribed with the capital letters WH in reverse with a trefoil interlace line above which extends down between the letters into two strands which interlace and then curve upwards, each terminating in a many-petalled flower. There are several small circular recesses inside and around the other elements of the design. Around the design is a border of short radiating lines. Around the outer edge of the bezel is a band of pellets set in a groove. The tapering shoulders of the band are decorated with a foliate design including downward pointing chevrons and a flower terminal. The bands is D-sectioned.

There is a reference in Hutchins, J, 1774, The History and Antiquities of the County of Dorset (p. 574) to the Harvey family which owned the manor of Tarrant Launceston one of whom was named William and was aged 21 in 1623. It is possible that this is a personal seal ring belonging to William Harvey
