An incomplete and worn copper-alloy Roman Colchester bow brooch. It is missing the majority of the spring, pin and catch plate due to old breaks, now worn.
The wings are rectangular, short and flat. They are separated at their centre by an integrally cast spring with three surviving coils and a rectangular hook. This is a flattened D-shape in section and curves forwards towards the head of the brooch. The bow is oval in section, undecorated and tapers to a sharp pointed foot.
This brooch measures 43.72mm in length, 13.74mm in width at wings, 5.40mm in width at bow, 4.00mm in thickness at bow, 7.57g in weight.
There are similar examples published by Hattatt (Hattatt, 1989, p. 296, no. 249) and recorded on the PAS database (SF-774E50).
