An incomplete and worn copper-alloy Roman Colchester derivative hinged bow brooch. It is missing part of the wing casing, the pin, lower half of the bow and catch plate due to old breaks, now worn.
The wings are semi-cylindrical and have been folded and fully enclosed. At the centre of the wings is a rectangular aperture, where the now missing pin would have originally hinged. The front of the wings are decorated with five transverse grooves in the form of two pairs and one single groove to either side of the bow. The bow is D-shaped in section with a flat back and rounded front face, tapering to old breaks. The front of the bow is decorated with four pairs of transverse grooves which create raised transverse ridges in their centre.
This brooch measures 26.77mm in length, 39.49mm in width at the wings, 7.40mm in width at the bow, 4.09mm in thickness, 7.51g in weight.
There is a similar example recorded by Hattatt (Hattatt, 1989, p. 299, no. 364).
