MOUNT

Unique ID: SOM-F89F5C

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A corroded post-medieval cast copper-alloy mount of 17th to 18th-century date. It has a flat oval body. From each shorter end of the body protrude a slightly raised trefoil terminal and flared terminal respectively. Each terminal features a pair of crude grooves to delineate the designs. From the flat back emerge two integral prongs. These spring from circular bases at the trefoilate terminal and the junction of the body with the other terminal. Only stubs of the prongs survive; they appear to be of rectangular cross-section. This mount has corroded to a red/brown colour. Such mounts with integral prongs may have been from equestrian straps. The circular springing platforms for each prong suggests a date later than the conventional 17th-century one given for such objects.
