BUTTON

Unique ID: SOM-F7CA4B

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A damaged, now incomplete, post-medieval lead-alloy button. The button has a slightly convex front with a moulded design of a sunken six petalled flower with raised lines between each petal that emerge from a central rosette. There is a line border around each sunken petal in low relief. The edge is shaped to the curved edges of the petals, though with alternating lines and double pellets that protrude. The back is flat, though raised at its circular centre which corresponds with the sunken petals. At the centre is a raised line from which two stubs emerge to have formed a simple looped shank. The loop has broken, with the greater surviving part curled back over itself. The perimeter of the button is abraded and part of one of the petals has been lost at the edge.

A button of similar form, though plainer, dated to the 17th century AD, can be found on this database, ref. SOM-B9CB11.
