FLAT AXEHEAD

Unique ID: LVPL-B84BD4

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete cast copper alloy probable flat axe dating from the Early Bronze Age, that is c. 2100-1900BC. The axe was probably part of the Migdale metalworking tradition.

The object is sub-triangular in plan with straight tapering sides and rounded ends. The blade measures 33.33mm in width and is 4.80mm thick at the cutting edge. The cutting edge is incomplete due to both ancient and recent breaks. The butt end is narrow and rounded measuring 10.60mm in width and 3.38mm thick. There are no flanges and no indication of a stop ridge.

Mid brownish-green smooth patina is present in patches on each face, however has flaked away in places. There is no patina remaining on the sides of the axe and no casting lines visible. Shallow scratches are visible on the remaining patina on each face which possibly occurred due to the plough or during recovery. Due to the unusual size of the object it may have been used as a chisel rather than an axe.
