An incomplete copper alloy ovoid (egg shaped) pommel, possibly from a dagger or a walking cane, of uncertain dating, but probably Post Medieval (AD 1500 to AD 1700).
The possible pommel is ovoid in shape, with a circular perforation (hole) at the top, a central ridge around the middle and an incomplete probable circular perforation in the base. The artefact is hollow, and currently contains some organic material (plant debris). The upper hole has an internal diameter of 6.0 mm.
The possible pommel measures 43.3 mm in length, 36.3 mm wide and 24.5 mm thick. It weighs 34.2 g.
The possible pommel is a mid green colour, with an even surface patina.
Several similar possible pommels have been recorded on the database including: HESH-107B92; SWYOR-FCDBF1; NLM-BC2883; IOW-2FE5A7, SF-C87850, NCL-1C8472 SUSS-A84682; LANCUM-4AFC01 and WMID-F5E1C3.
SUSS-A84682 notes that "Other similar spherical objects have been recorded as pommels from swords and daggers. Some of these examples extend the date of use for these particular pommels from AD 1100-AD 1500. Ward Perkins (1940: pp. 21-38) notes similar spherical pommels (Type VI), have been identified as in use in the 12th century and surviving into the 14th century. A similar example in ovoid form has not been found on the PAS database, nor in Ward Perkins (1940)". Most of the examples on the database have a hole in the top of the pommel as well, to allow it to be securely attached to the tang.
Identification of this artefact as a possible pommel is probable, but it is also possible that it is a handle for a walking stick or cane, or that it is part of a door knocker.
