SCRAPER (TOOL)

Unique ID: SOM-78504F

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Knapped side-and-end scraper made on a tertiary flint flake. It is broadly D-shaped in plan. At the short straight proximal end is a very large bulb of percussion on the ventral face, interrupted by a very deep bulb scar or later damage. It is trapezoid in section with two arrises running down the dorsal face created by the scars from previous removals of large flakes parallel to this one. There is some damage from mis-strikes at the edge of the platform at the proximal end of the dorsal face

The retouch extends around the distal end complete down one side. Long, scaler, abrupt retouch has created an almost straight distal end. The retouch along the convex curved right edge (as seen from the dorsal face) is more sub-parallel and shorter, abrupt at the distal end and semi-abrupt to shallow in the cnetre as the flake thins. Damage at the distal and proximal ends of this edge obscure some of the retouch. The opposite side is straight and chipped in places but has no retouch.

It is 45.9mm long, 37.1mm wide and 9.8mm thick; it weighs 17.92g. The worked areas are heavily recorticated, covered in thick, white patina obscuring the colour of the flint.

The thickness of the flake and large bulb of percussion suggests hard hammer working and a later Neolithic or Bronze Age date, c. 3,300 to 800 BC.
