BUCKLE

Unique ID: NMS-75BB29

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Incomplete Late Saxon (Anglo-Scandinavian) D-shaped copper alloy buckle frame decorated in the 'English' Ringerike style. The sides and outside edge are composed of a pair of animals, to be viewed in profile with their mouths gripping the ends of the bar. On the outside edge the animals terminate in scrolls flanking a pin notch and linked to a central foliate motif. The animals' eyes are blind-drilled holes and both have collar-like pairs of transverse engraved lines at the neck. Their ears are elongated with lobed terminals, one of which is missing through damage or miscasting (there is a void on the reverse at this point). The central knop of the foliate motif is incomplete because of a recent break.

A close parallel is a buckle from Upper Thames Street, London (Thomas 2001; Kershaw 2010, part 2, fig. 5), which differs in minor details such as its upturned snout.

Extant length 27.5mm. Width 34mm. Thickness 2.6 - 3.5mm. 11th century.
