A small silver annular brooch. The circular frame is circular in cross-section, and one side (the front) is decorated with two clusters of transverse grooves filled with niello. The wrap-around head of the pin secure it to the annular frame of the brooch, is lightly wider (2mm) than the shaft (width 1mm). External frame diameter 12 x 13mm; frame thickness 1mm; pin length 12mm; weight 0.55g.

A number of annular brooches with similar pins are known from Wales. They range from small silver stirrup brooches, such as those from Llanfaes (Anglesey), Llanbedr Duffryn Clwyd (Denbighshire) and Abergavenny (Monmouthshire; Redknap 1994, nos 21, 23) to larger brooches from Kidwelly Castle (Carmarthenshire), Crickhowell (Powys) and a site near Cowbridge (Vale of Glamorgan; Redknap 1994, nos 11, 22 and 13). Occasionally isolated pins are found, such as one found at Rhos-on-Sea, Conwy, in 2008 (NMW Treasure no. 08.06). These parallels ate of thirteenth- or fourteenth-century date, and the Montgomery brooch, on the basis of such comparanda, must date to the same period.
