A Post Medieval silver coin; a shilling of William III (AD 1694 - 1702) which has been reused, probably as a love token, by polishing it smooth and stamping it with punched marks. The coin has a diameter of 25.18mm and is 0.97mm thick. 4.34g. See Spink number 3497 - 3519.

The only part of the coin design surviving is the outline of the back of the monarch's head, and the letters MVS from GVLIELMVS on the obverse. The centre of the obvers has been stamped (possibly engraved) with a florid W and a second letter or two, perhaps an N. The reverse is stamped near the centre with an arrow or design of four radiating lines. There is no evidence of the coin having been bent into an S shape as is common on love tokens, which usually mutiliate a sixpence of William III. Compare LANCUM-BBA1A3 a token with numerous stamps and marks made from a coin. Similar objects were also used as advertising tokens and trial pieces. Touchpieces are also similar, but technically, they were made specially rather than being a recycled coin. See NMS-BE5AB1 for more information.
