A complete post-Medieval cast copper-alloy scale-tang knife end-cap (1500-1600).
This anthropomorphic end-cap is in the form of a forward facing male bust wearing a hat. The head is pointed-oval in cross-section and the shoulders are oval in cross-section. The head, facing forwards and slightly upwards, has prominent facial features. It has a sharp ridge for a nose, the eyes are deep and circular and the mouth is a horizontal groove. The ears are absent. At each side of the head there is an oblique groove which emanates from close to the chin and projects upwards to meet the hat. The close fitting, pointed and faceted hat may represent a bonnet or helmet. There is a circumferential groove between the hat and the head. The shoulders have vertical sides and there is a horizontal groove close to the base. On the underside of the base there is a central slot that accommodated the missing knife tang. The slot measures 11.0mm in length and c. 0.9mm in width. The depth of the slot varies, at one end it has a depth of 3.1mm and at the opposite end the depth is 2.6mm.
The object is reddish brown and green with traces of a mid-green patina. There is no indication of iron staining.
Height: 20.5mm; width: 13.6mm; thickness: 9.6mm. Weight: 10.67g.
