HOOKED TAG

Unique ID: BH-A61221

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A silver-gilt hooked tag, largely complete and in good condition, comprising three joined elements: a headplate, a hanger and a basal hook.

The central feature of the headplate's moulded decoration is a five-petalled flower head; this is surrounded by three subhemispherical bosses, one located in each of the three lobes. Two pellets decorate the perimeter, situated within the top and left-hand clefts respectively. The smoothness of the right-hand cleft suggests either that no pellet ever existed there, or, if it did exist, it may have been removed deliberately. A ropework border marks the perimeter of the head. On the reverse, across the widest part of the body is a transverse attachment bar. Attached below this is the flattened upper end of the circular-sectioned rearward hook, which tapers to a point at its distal end. Gilding survives across much of the upper surface of the head.

Length: 26.3mm; Width: 15.3mm; Depth: 11.7mm. Weight: 4.63g

The trilobate head with attached hanger and rearward hook are typical features of Read's Class D, Type 6 (2008: 75 - 81). Similar hooked tags can be found on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database: SWYOR-1CEF77 (2012 T453) and SWYOR-9BBE06 (2011 T611).
