FINGER RING

Unique ID: GLO-69827D

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Gilded silver finger-ring that has an undecorated hoop D-shaped in cross-section. The bezel is made from a worn quatrefoil plate that has been soldered onto the outside of the hoop. The face of the bezel is decorated with an engraved cross dividing the bezel into four panels; more lightly engraved oblique lines emanate from one side of each arm of the cross, thereby dividing each panel in two and creating an impression of rotating movement.

See similar examples at KENT-299A33 (2007T493), LEIC-C4F333 (2011T314), DENO-A2D213 (2009 T540) and WAW-D5B7F1 (2011T187), all dated to the medieval period (13th to 15th centuries). Each of these has a quatrefoil bezel engraved with veins to resemble a leaf, however, and the precise detail of the decoration on this bezel is different.
