A folded, lead alloy seal, possibly a modern cloth inspection seal dating from AD 1800 - 1950. The seal is a single sheet of lead which is folded double and fastened shut with a central rivet. One face, pierced by the fastening stud, has a rounded end and carries an impression in relief reading: "[...]IM(P)SON A[...]" round the edge. There are also two numbers: "36" which have been crudely inscribed with a sharp tool. The other face has a square end and carries an impression in relief of three lines of small, rectangular cartouches each containing a letter or number that read: [-]45//B6I//3(9)73. These may possibly have been stamped individually. The centre of the square end has a short, rectangular protrusion that has been folded over between the two main faces of the seal. The seal is 27.2mm long, 23.3mm wide and 8.8mm thick. It weighs 16.06gm. Other seals with similar stamped letters can be seen on the Bagseal Gallery: www.bagseals.org/gallery such as BSG.CS.00321 and BSG.CS.00318 which are interpreted as Modern cloth seals.
