A complete lead or lead alloy token, of Post medieval dating (Late 16th Century)
The token is circular in plan. The obverse depicts a double headed eagle with no visible inscription. The reverse depicts a crowned rose, with the inscription REGINA [BEATI]. North 2062; Mitchiner 4738ff.; Powell type 25.
It has a diameter of 21.5 mm and 2.3 mm thick. It weighs 4.1 g
The token is a mid grey colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.
North (1975, 140) notes that such pieces were probably medalets rather than tokens as some appear to relate to Mary, Queen of Scots. These rare pieces are normally found in London, and were thought to be struck about 1574 (ibid., 140); Mitchiner (1988, 1653) has since revised the dates of the 'GOD SAVE' reverse to c. 1590 - c. 1603 AD.
Several similar tokens have been recorded on the PAS database including: LON-8FCF62; HAMP-6D2F22; IOW-51CC48; SUSS-590396; LON-8BE550; WILT-CA0C82.
