HARNESS PENDANT

Unique ID: BERK-C57448

Object type certainty: Certain

A worn but complete cast copper alloy heraldic horse harness pendant of the medieval period. The pendant is heater shield shaped with a suspension loop at the top. The pendant appears to bear the blazon 'gules, three lions passant gardant in pale or (armed and langued azure)'. These are the Royal Arms of England, issued during the reign of Richard I (AD 1189-1999), known in this form until 1340 (after, shown quartered with the French), although as Ashley (2002, 8) notes, this date cannot be used as a definite terminus ante quem A small area of gilding remains but the red enamel has mostly degraded. It is likely that this pendant would have belonged on the harnesses of horses belonging to retainers or workers of royal lands and estates during the later 13th and 14th century AD.
