BROOCH

Unique ID: NMS-AC9E69

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Fragment of a medieval gilt silver annular framed brooch, consisting a small part of the frame with, attached by solder, a flat and square plate in the form of an elaborate quatrefoil. The distorted frame fragment is part round-sectioned and part twisted, the change, on the reverse of the plate, marked by a blob of solder. The breaks are not recent.

Diameter of brooch not calculable. Plate 7.3 x 7.1 x 0.6mm. Frame cross-section diameter 1.2mm. Overall thickness 1.8mm. Weight 0.55g. c.1250 - c.1350.

Brooches with round-sectioned frames and four applied plates are not exceptional, though at one time the distribution was restricted to northern England and southern Scotland (Cherry, J. in Alexander and Binski 1987, 486, cat. no. 652). Examples from Norfolk include one from the Watton area (HER 40791, Treasure Annual Report 2004, 98 no. 156), another from Heacham (HER 16297, NMS-D8B8F2) and a solitary quatrefoil plate from North Lopham (HER 30181, NMS-4051F7). See also brooches from Gloucestershire (Treasure Annual Report 2005/6, 106, no. 328) and the Isle of Wight (IOW-6CE582).

Notes:

The age and precious metal content of this item therefore qualify it as treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
