A sherd of Iron-rich sandy ware dating from the 11th-14th century. The sherd comes from the handle of a vessel and has deep incisions that are up to 21mm in length and form a very crude decoration. The fabric is sandy and is has a orange/brown colour. There is remains of a yellow/ brown glaze running around the incisions. Parallels of this type of pottery can be found amongst the archaeology collections at the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Stoke on Trent.

Notes:

This type of pottery has been found throughout Staffordshire (particularly Stafford) from this period. However, no kilns producing this ware have yet been found in the area. This style of pottery has been found as part of earthenware jars, jugs, bowls, dishes, dripping pans, pipkins and curfews (fire covers).
