An incomplete copper alloy strap end with trefoil plate and box chape, of Medieval dating (AD 1390 to AD 1420).
The strap end is now in two pieces, with part of the reverse of the box chape missing. The trefoil terminal is no longer attached to the box chape. The terminal has two incomplete ciruclar holes between the three leaves. Diagonal grooves on the front of the terminal emphasis foliate detail. The front of the box chape has been decorated with a five pointed star or stylised person. Rocker arm decoration is present between the limbs. The reverse is plain. Traces of mineralised textile are present inside the box chape.
The chape measures 23.0 mm in length, 23.8 mm wide and 5.2 mm thick. The trefoil terminal measures 17.7 mm in length, 19.2 mm wide and 2.7 mm thick. Together they both weigh 10.0 g.
The strap end fragments are a mid to dark green green colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.
Several similar strap ends with a trefoil terminal, have been recorded on the PAS database, including: WMID-1A58E5; GLO-05E875; NMS-4C5E75; BUC-1B9DE3. All are medieval in dating (AD 1390 to AD 1420).
