A complete copper-alloy Roman hair pin. This pin has a fairly small biconical shaped head measuring c5.7mm in diameter and 4.5mm in height. The shaft is roughly circular in cross-section (c3mm in width) and now bent, it is thicker in its middle and tapers to a sharp point. It measures c52mm in length (length when bent).

This hairpin is very similar to those hairpins assigned by H E M Cool to Group 1, sub-group E, which has a tapering shank with an expansion part of the way down. Sub-group E does show a marked concentration in East Anglia, where over half of the examples examined by Cool were found. The pins from sub-group E are most likely to have been in use in the first two centuries (Cool, 1990, 151-154, fig 1, no 4).
