COSMETIC MORTAR

Unique ID: SUR-42484F

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A late Iron Age or early Roman cast copper alloy cosmetic mortar, now slightly corroded and pitted. The mortar is crescentic and end-looped. The groove at the terminal might suggest it is intended to be phallic.

Mortars and pestles of this type are unusual insular objects which are rarely found outside Britain.
