Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete lead or lead alloy conical weight, of probable Medieval (AD 1100 to AD 1500) dating.

The weight is conical in shape with a circular cross section. Remains of an iron suspension loop are present at the apex (top) of the weight. A circular recess is present on the base.

The weight is 46.6 mm tall, has a maximum diameter of 32.6 mm at the base and a diameter of 11.2 mm at the top. It weighs 248.2 g (8.75 oz).

The weight is a mid to dark grey colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

Weights can be hard to date due to being a functional artefact, forms and styles do not alter significantly over time.
