WEIGHT

A complete copper alloy trade weight of Post Medieval dating (18th Century AD).

The weight is circular in plan. The obverse has a raised ring around the edge as a border. Four stamped marks are present, two however are unclear. The legible ones consist of A sword of St Paul (representing London) and a Ewer representing the London Founder's Company. One of the illegible ones is probably a crowned letter, indicating which monarch it was made under. Filemarks are present on the reverse.

The weight is a dark green colour with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

It measures 34.2 mm in diameter, and is 4.5 mm thick. It weighs 27.1 grams (0.96 oz).

Originally it was probably a one ounce weight, and due to abrasion, has lost some mass. Weights of this style are normally 18th Century in dating.
