COIN HOARD

Unique ID: NMS-D4F0CA

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Two silver denarii, both in relatively crisp condition. Apart from siliquae from the second half of the 4th century and nummi from the 330s onwards, no other Roman coins have so far been found in this field. This fact, combined with the closeness of these two coins to one another in date and condistion, makes it very likely that they went into the ground together, either as part of a purse loss or a larger, concealed hoard. The two coins are:

1. Silver denarius of Elagabalus, Rome, reverse P M TR P IIII COS III P P, Sol advancing left with whip, star in left field, RIC IV.2, 40, weight 2.68g, AD221

2. Silver denarius of Severus Alexander, Rome, reverse P M TR P II COS P P, Pax standing left with olive branch and sceptre, RIC IV.2, 27, weight 2.02g, AD223

The loss or deposition of these two coins most probably falls, given their condition, in the 220s or 230s
