A very corroded and encrusted iron horseshoe of uncertain date, but possibly Medieval or Post Medieval. The shoe is asymetrical in plan with a pointed U shaped inner arch. The heels are thickened and one appears to have a calkin, a feature less often seen on Modern examples. One nail survives projecting from the hoof side of the shoe. The toe is a little damaged. The web is wide at 33mm at the toe, and 36mm at the quarters. There is no evidence of the shoe being fullered. The shoe is 100mm long, 98mm wide and 19mm thick at the possible calkin. It weighs 281g. Compare type 3 and 4 in The Medieval Horse, pages 75 - 101.
