An incomplete Roman (AD 50-150) copper alloy Colchester Derivative brooch missing the pin. The brooch measures 43.5mm in length, 17.05mm wide, 13.85mm thick and weighs 6.55 grams.
The wings are C-shaped in cross-section (with a hollowed area for the spring) and span 17.05mm. They are decorated with a single vertical groove.
The bow extends from the front of the wings with a slight hump to the top and corresponding groove beneath; the top of the double-pierced lug projects into the top at this point, the spring survives in the lug and eight coils are visible on the reverse of the wings, the pin is missing.
A central vertical rib survives in places along the length of the bow. A single horizontal groove is visible above the foot, the foot is broadly D shaped in cross section. The catchplate is complete and broadly triangular in cross section.
The pin is a different alloy to the brooch.
