An incomplete copper alloy medieval (AD c.1150-c.1450) possible brooch, missing its pin and almost half of its frame. Overall the object measures 25.5mm long, 20.6mm wide and 6.3mm thick. It weighs 2.90g.
The object appears to be part of the open frame of a lozenge, square or rectangular shaped brooch with a large spherical-headed (5.6mm in diameter) rivet at each corner. Only two of the corners are intact; a third has broken in half and is missing its rivet. A similar brooch (in Egan and Pritchard, 2002, Dress Accessories: 1150-1450, 256-7 no.1343) has separately cast decorative sexfoils attached by spherical-headed rivets, and it is possible that the rivets of this brooch also held separately cast decoration in place.
