BELL

Unique ID: SF-005205

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete and damaged circular copper-alloy sheet spherical bell of Medieval date. It is missing its lower half and pea due to old breaks, now worn.

There is a flanged seam line where the two halves would have originally been joined together. At the top are the remains of a separate copper-alloy loop. This is inserted upwards through a hole cut in the upper half of the body and the ends were bent outwards and then inwards, so that the loop remained rigid rather than swivelling. Either side of the loop is a circular sound hole.

This bell measures 32.00mm in diameter, 0.98mm in thickness, 4.22g in weight.

There is a similar example from London (Egan and Pritchard, 1991, p. 339, no. 1644).
