Medieval copper-alloy strap end: It has an elongated trapezoidal body which is mainly undecorated. In profile the strap end is split at the widest terminal. The two plates, at this split, have a small gap and is riveted together with a copper alloy rivet at either end. The narrow terminal is decorated with an upright projecting long necked animal head. The neck is rectangular in section with rounded corners, with three vertical ridges at the base on both side faces. The head is also rectangular with a notch for a mouth and three ridges across the top of the head depicting, possibly a mane. The surface of the strap end has a brown/green coloured patina. It measures 41.47mm long, 6.25mm wide, and 11.16mm tall, weighing 3.6g.
Two other almost identical strap ends have been recorded on the database, SWYOR-BA96E5 from Hillam, North Yorkshire and DENO-47F426 from Newark and Sherwood district, Nottinghamshire. Objects with similar styled terminals have been recorded on the PAS database, such as YORYM-20BBD9, YORYM-866A28, NMS-8E5AA0, WMID-F49B66, etc, No excavated examples of this style of object are currently known, but they are thought to date to the medieval period, c. 1200-1400 AD; see YORYM-20BBD9 for details.
