MOUNT

Unique ID: SF-5C8E69

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A cast copper-alloy mount of Medieval date. It has a dome-shaped sub-circular plate and is of seemingly zoomorphic form. The front face has incised, cross-hatched decoration covering the upper half, presumably representative of hair. This terminates with short transverse notches and slightly projecting triangular ears at each side of the plate. Beneath the ears are two large circular eyes followed by a projecting rectangular snout with transverse groove at its base suggestive of an open mouth. At the centre of the mount is a single rivet hole holding in place a separately cast copper-alloy cylindrical rivet with flattened heads. The concave back face is undecorated. The entire object measures 14.87mm in length, 12.67mm in width, 4.57mm in thickness and 2.47g in weight.

This is a decorative mount of probable zoomorphic form. Similar examples have been recorded through the PAS and variously interpreted as stylised dogs, bears or hedgehogs (e.g. LEIC-8C29A7, WILT-40B002, SWYOR-E98154, BH-3B5EC2 or BH-F28767), as well as from Meols (Griffiths et al. 2007: 119). It is of Medieval date, c.14th-15th centuries AD.
